Medical Research Council (MRC) Scientist advance understanding of cell death.

From previous research it has been proven that a complex called "DISC" made up of different proteins which is formed due to the activation of Death receptors, trigger apoptosis by switching on key players in the cell death process. Also it has been discovered that this same complex can activate cell survival. This raised a lot of questions such as how DISC could trigger both cell death and cell survival.

Recently scientists at the MRC Toxocology unit have found that DISC can trigger cell death or cell survival by switching the activity of key death promoting molecules. stopping DISC from functioning properly prevents the cell death programme from being carried out efficiently and instead results in cell survival.
